Research Shows Women Place Low Priority On Contraception
Marie Stopes International Australia today reminded all women of the importance of having regular contraception check ups and using a method that is best for their needs.
The sexual health organisation made the calls following research which found that 3 in 10 women (34.33%) state that they have never been to a GP specifically to discuss contraception or to have a contraception check up.
“This research is indicating that there are sexually active women out there who really aren’t placing the emphasis on contraception that they should be,” said Jill Michelson, National Clinical Adviser for Marie Stopes International Australia.
“With statistics showing us that unplanned pregnancy is a reality for over half of all Australian women and that 60% of them were using some form of contraception when they fell pregnant, it’s vital that they take the time to have a dedicated contraception check up with their GP, local family planning clinic or Marie Stopes centre.”
The research, conducted on 1000 18-35 year old women nationally[1], also found that nearly a quarter (22.42%) of all women admit that they have never looked into other contraceptive options apart from the one they were using.
“Many women have been on the pill for years and have never stopped to explore other hormonal and non-hormonal methods that may be better suited to them and their life stage,” said Ms Michelson.
“Australian women today can choose from a range of daily and longer term contraception options - many of which do not require daily adherence like the pill does.”
Survey responses also highlighted the need for some GPs to be more proactive in encouraging their patients to review their contraceptive options. Less than half (49.21%) of all women said that their GP had proactively asked them about their contraception during a check up, with the remaining saying that they either hadn't been asked or they couldn't remember being asked.
7 out of 10 (69.44%) women also stated that their GP had never suggested they consider looking at different methods of contraception - the majority of those women were either currently on or last used the pill (73.94%).
“All that is needed to ensure women are on the right track with their contraception are two simple questions at each appointment – what contraception are you using at the moment, and are you happy with it?” said Ms Michelson.
To assist women in making contraception choices, a new awareness campaign and website has been developed. The campaign, sponsored by Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD), encourages young women to ask questions about all contraceptive options available to them. A confidential online survey has also been developed to inform women’s discussion with their GP, nurse or health professional.
