Contraception and Contraceptive methods

Marie Stopes International has specialised in providing contraception advice and help since 1921, when Dr Marie Stopes opened the first family planning clinic in London.

The types of contraception you choose depends on your personal circumstances – your age, your way of life, whether or not you have children, your health and the need to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Different methods suit different people, so before making a decision, it is a good idea to look at the different options available and find out about their advantages and disadvantages.

Your contraception options include:

  • Hormonal Methods: the pill, NuvaRing, Implanon, Depo-Provera injection
  • Barrier Methods: male condom, female condom, diaphragm-cap
  • Intrauterine Methods: IUD Multiload, IUS Mirena
  • Permanent Methods: female sterilisation, vasectomy
  • Emergency Methods: emergency contraceptive pill/morning after pill, IUD

Although modern contraceptive methods are extremely reliable, unfortunately, as yet, there is no ideal method of contraception that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. Age, circumstances and regular, correct usage all have a bearing on the success rates of contraceptive methods. Marie Stopes International centres can discuss the most suitable and convenient method of contraception for you. Our doctors or nurses can then supply your chosen method and arrange follow-up appointments to check all is well.
